		<description>Ah, good question.  That&#039;s a cool feature of the shell.

When you run a command like &lt;strong&gt;cmd &lt;&lt;&lt; str&lt;/strong&gt;, then &lt;strong&gt;str&lt;/strong&gt; is shell-expanded and fed to &lt;strong&gt;cmd&lt;/strong&gt; as standard input.

For example:

&lt;strong&gt;$ bc &lt;&lt;&lt; &quot;7+3&quot;
10
&lt;/strong&gt;
