Here’s a short video I made of the surfers in the center of Munich today. This is one of my favorite spots in the city, always fun to watch.

The wave is about a meter tall. The canal itself is maybe two meters deep. The wave is actually caused by a bulge of the canal floor near the bridge. I think it’s quite a bit shallower there. But I’ve never been in, so I’m not sure!

I don’t think you’d want to get in, there’s a lot of water coming through there and a few late night drinkers (not surfers!) have drowned there after taking an unwise dip. Indeed. When I came to the US, I needed some time to get used to people yelling around in public. In Germany, yelling people might be understood to be drunk or simply unpleasant. But there’re exceptions like soccer matches

Was there last week and it is definitely amazing what they do there… was quite impressed with the city surfing concept. As far as I understood it, the surfers have wooden boards of different sizes with ropes attached to each end of the board and then they attach the ropes to the bridge and throw the board into the water which changes the shape of the waves.
Pretty cool!

It is really amazing to look at. I don’t know any other city in the world where you can see something like this in the center of the town. And you can go and have a walk in Englisher garten just near this place. Munich is really a beautifull city to live in, I recommend it for expats.
