Complete Outsourcing Should be done only to reliable resources with whom a longer-term relationship can be build.

Hi Nat,

An interesting post with some great idea. I would like and will be delighted to get a copy of your wedding gift (Travel guide to Florence) :-) .

I do agree that we should not completely outsource our work. The outsource process should be placed as giving a difficult task (the weakness on our side) to the expert.

I don't think these sites remove the client from design at all. In fact you could argue that they help the client by providing them with inspiring examples of the possible - a range of creative options that they probably wouldn't be able to get otherwise. As far as I know there's nothing to say that the 'winning' design has to be final. If I were the client, or designer, I would treat that as the start of the relationship, with the designer and client able to jointly take the 'winning' design forward.
Also, your elance tips are excellent. As someone who's attempted to use elance as a service provider, I really wish more job posters followed them. You get pretty sick of wading through job specs that read, in their entirety: 'I want a clone of ebay/youtube. The budget for this job is $250'.
